The Effect of Television Viewing on the Academic Achievement of Basic Stage Children in Jordan / Mohammad Ahmad Sawalha

This study aimed at investigating the level of television viewing by basic stage children in the first six grades and its relationship to their academic achievement. The sample consisted of 2257 children (1362 males and 859 females) in the first six grades of the basic stage in all the geographical and administrative areas in Jordan. The tools in this study were a questionnaire concerning television viewing. and school grade records. The results of the study were as follows: 

1. The mean of television viewing of the sample was 3.38 hours daily.
2. There were no significant statistical differences between means of groups in television viewing due to sex effect.
3. There were significant statistical differences between means of groups in television viewing due to class effect.
4. There were significant statistical differences between means of groups in television viewing due to interaction between sex and class.
5. There was a negative relationship between academic achievement and the television viewing mean in case of the overall sample. and there was a positive relationship between academic achievement and the television viewing mean in the case of the first. second, and fifth class students.
