Factors Affecting Students’ Participation in Classroom Discussions / Ali M. Al-Massawry, Abdul Ghani Boushwar

This study was designed to survey students‘ opinions concerning their lack of active participation in classroom discussions. A random sample of 608 students was used from the School of Education; in Abha and their responses to a 30 item questionnaire were analysed. Only items which received over 25% of students‘ agreement were rankoordered. It was found that the majority of students ranked teacher personality as the most important item that determines their participation in classroom discussions. The study discussed each item as it is rank-ordered by students‘ responses. Recommendations as to how to improve students‘ participation were discussed at the end of the study.
