Antecedents of Commitment to Academic Organizations / Dakheel A.S. Al-Dakheelallah

The aim of this paper is to describe a study which investigated the influence of certain variables on the commitment to an academic organization. These variables have been frequently defined in the organizational literature as antecedents of commitment to other types of organizations. The hypotheses were tested using a sample of Ph.D. faculty members at a major Saudi university (n = 108) in a questionnaire survey. The results of multiple regression analysis showed that organizational commitment is associated primarily with age, tenure, centralization and participation. job-related interaction, interpersonal relation and job satisfaction. but not with salary or formalization. However, the overall pattern of relationship suggested that the variable of job-satisfaction is the most important among the variables studied. Theoretical and practical implications are explored.
