Abstract: This study investigated first-year college students’ performance in slope concepts in three representations: graphical, algebraic, and word.  As well as the meaning they held for slope. A descriptive research approach was used in the study. Data was collected using a test and an interview was conducted with 233 students.

The results showed low performance in identifying slope. The average score on the slope test was 40%. In comparison, the suggested mean was 60%. There was a statically significant difference between students’ mean and the suggested mean, in favour of the suggested mean. There was no statistically significant difference in students’ performance in identifying slope between males and females. Additionally, there were no statistically significant differences in students' performances among the different representations of the slope.

Results of the interview showed the students’ limited concept of slope, where 75% of students mention three concepts of slope or less. A clear focus on the algebraic representation of slope was also seen in the results; it was mentioned by 80% of students. Almost 40% of students were able to identify real-world applications for slopes, particularly the physics application (kinematics); 20% of them associate the kinematics application with what they studied in physics class at Kuwait university.

Key words: Algebraic ratio, Geometric ratio , Real-world situation.
